The last few issues have been just okay for me. I think the Sandeaters are interesting characters and the constant threat of Sandeater attack adds to the richness of the story, but I don’t think they needed a whole three book stretch dedicated to them and their near impossible to decipher tongue.

Back to business with episode 19. Back to business indeed.

There are develoments in this issue that effectively push the overall story forward, answering some burning questions while a few new ones pop up. Much like a certain maddeningly addictive TV show.

Marcus can see! Could he are the whole time? That’s what I want to know! And is that chick really his sister? Looked like a long lost lover to me. Or maybe that’s just my sordid mind.

What exactly are Marcus and Mary and Michael and possibly Abi? Where do these strange powers they posses come from?

Will they get to Areeyasi?

And just what will Marcus and now Mary do with all those Sunners at their doorstep?

Check out Wasteland 20 for answers.

Or more questions?

Well, it all comes to a head in this one.

I was going to go into an in depth analysis of the themes but I hear the series will continue on with Sky Doll 4 so I’ll hold off on my speil for now.

From the first issue we knew there was something special about Noa. She wasn’t quite like all the other dolls. Hints were scattered throughout regarding her dual nature, but in #3 it was laid out in black and white (and color).

The book artfully handles some pretty heavy themes. The first and most obvious is religion. It illustrates how, even despite the best intentions, religion, above all things, has the power to corrupt as people abandon their quest for spiritual betterment in favor of a quest for power.

Another major theme is the role of women in society.

In the world laid out in the book, women are either holy figures to be upheld or objects for pleasure. There is no happy medium.

Agape represented both and she was killed for it, upseting an important balance.

In the resurrection of Agape lies the hope that the balance can be restored and that humans can effectively be divine creatures and creatures of the earth simultaneously.

Well I knew this day would come. But it didn’t make the ending of what had become one of my favorite books any easier.

The ending was too abrupt. It felt forced, contrived. And I suppose it was. It can’t be easy to wrap up a series in a few issues because you’re being cancelled.

In any case, the last issue of Exterminators was like a mix of everything great about the series; ick factor, scary bugs, truly disturbed villains (cue the frame where AJ is seen wearing Paige’s underwear), otherworldly forces, and not to mention a healthy dose of just-blow-shit-up, and multiplied it by a hundred.
I for one can’t stand bugs; niether the sight of them nor the thought. But I found myself falling in love with this series because it was different and so sublimely fucking sick and twisted. I could hardly wait until the next intallment came out and yes, I have all thirty issues (you should too).
Anyway I’m sad to see it go. I can only imagine the twisty things Oliver and Moore would have come up with were they allowed to continue.

I hope this book does end up being made into a television series but it really won’t be the same.

Let this be a lesson to geeks everywhere. Support your favorite stuff in any way you can. If you love something, let people know.

It would be a shame to let more great works like this get swallwed up by the comic book publishing machine.
